Famed broadcaster, journalist and author Bob Costas will headline the next installment of the College of Communication and the Arts' Sports Media Speaker Series, which features leaders in the industry talking directly to students about the changing media landscape. Taking center stage with Bob Ley '76, the two icons will discuss the evolution and future of the sports media industry.
"The Changing Face of Sports Media," co-sponsored by the Stillman School of Business, will feature the two titans in broadcasting. Ley and Costas have more than 80 years of experience between them and have won dozens of Emmys as well as a Peabody and a Walter Cronkite Award.
"In many ways, there is almost no one better qualified to talk about the changing face of sports media than Bob Costas," said Bob Ley, who spent nearly 40 years at ESPN. "He has never shied away from controversy, and with a career that has spanned more than 40 years at the pinnacle of the sporting world he knows the game—and the games within the game—the pressure points, the networks and what it means to be, if you will, "outside the lines."
Ley is currently working with students in the Visual and Sound Media Program (Broadcasting) to executive produce an introductory video on Costas for the event. Ley is no stranger to Seton Hall and the College of Communication and the Arts. A proud alumnus, Ley regularly returns to campus for to participate in speaker events, lead workshops and to teach master classes.
"This is an example of the kind of high-level experiences we provide to our students," said former Sports Illustrated Executive Editor B.J. Schecter, professional-in-residence in the College of Communication and the Arts. "Our hands-on practicums combined with academic curriculum ensure that students experience all aspects of producing professional broadcasts and reporting, many times under the direction of industry experts. And now they're working with the best."
Deirdre Yates, Dean of the College of Communication and the Arts, is thrilled with this latest installment of the series, noting, "This speaker series is intended to bring the best in sports journalism and broadcasting to Seton Hall's students—and once again, it undoubtedly has."
The College currently offers a minor in Sports Media, providing students with multi-disciplinary opportunities and access to experts in communication, broadcasting, business and journalism.
Last spring, the Sports Business and Media Ethics Symposium at Seton Hall featured a number of leading industry executives and professionals. Adam Silver, J.D., commissioner of the National Basketball Association (NBA), was interviewed by Professor Charles Grantham, former executive director of the National Basketball Players Association and director of the Center for Sport Management in the Stillman School of Business. Ley interviewed fellow ESPN host and commentator, Stephen A. Smith of First Take.
Other events and roundtables have included New York Times best-selling authors Jeff Benedict (Tiger Woods) and Ben Reiter (Astroball: The New Way to Win It All), Sports Illustrated's Tom Verducci, former ESPN writer Jayson Stark, and the MLB and NHL network's Marc Weiner on "Baseball and Spring Training: Covering America's Game Today"; and the Athletic's Paul Fichtenbaum and Dana O'Neil together during, "The Athletic and the Future of Media: The New Model for Sports Coverage."
